CRIME
TOGETHER!
Colonel D. VOSLOO

We at Table View SAPS will never be enough staff to be everywhere all the time, therefore we need the help of you, our community to assist us. We cannot do this job in isolation and the eyes and ears of the community is very important in the fight against crime.
Our success rate is very good when being tipped off by someone. The recent dagga bust in Visagie Street and the Abalone drying facility in Grey Road are two current examples.
Because of the types of crimes (property related) in our area, one understands that it is perceived to be not as serious and therefore the community involvement is generally low.
If we however, recorded a very high murder and robbery rate (contact crimes) people will feel much more unsafe and would generally want to become more involved.
In mid December 2010 we kicked off with our SMS Project. Although it is still very much a work-in-progress there is heaps of potential. Currently we are standing at 1200 subscribers with a proper marketing strategy and a media launch, we will be able to triple that in no time.
This initiative has really become a very “passive way” for the community to become actively involved.
We at Table View SAPS will continue to carry through the National and Provincial Strategy to police liquor, drugs and second hand goods.
We are currently busy building a formidable partnership with various other Government Departments in the fight against crime. This multi-agency approach will give us the more teeth in the fight against drugs in particular, but also general law enforcement.
We will continue with existing partnerships with private security companies, NGO’s like TLC and CIC as well as Department of Social Development.
We have started looking into utilizing various pieces of legislation, for example the POCA ACT (the Prevention of Organized Crime Act) in dealing with property owners providing for illegal operations being conducted at their premises, whether rented out or not.
We urge the community to actively get involved in Community structures like our Community Police Forum and the Sector Forums.
Sector Managers might also be knocking on your door with a view of starting a “Street Watch” if your area is a crime hotspot.
Lets take hands this year in the fight against crime.
Please also report unprofessional police conduct and corruption to my office.

The year has started with a bang and before realizing it, it is March already.
Suddenly the Festive Season is just a distant memory.
SAPS have been going non-stop in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment. Our serious crime seems to be stabilizing, but the property crime is constantly on the rise.
During December 2010, we recorded one of the highest months in the reporting of burglaries and theft out of motor vehicles.
