TLC Outreach Project

Together towards a brighter future

The mission of the Home of Hope as an organization is to provide services for the safety, well-being and protection of all children, families and individuals in need of it; this is where hope begins...

ABOUT US

The Home of Hope is a voluntary association and a registered non-profit organisation as well as a public benefit organisation established in August 2005. The reason for our establishment and existence was to create a much needed support system for the local social worker and a place of safety for children:-

However, as the project developed more needs in the community were identified and the organisation has realigned itself to provide a broader service with the focus remaining on children.

Our team comprises a voluntary management committee, three full-time social workers, two house parents, five care givers as well as volunteers.

The Community Intervention Centre is a non-governmental, non-profit-making organization which provides a FREE 24-hour on-site trauma intervention and support service to the Blaauwberg community.

The basic area covered falls under the Tableview, Milnerton and Melkbosstrand SAPS jurisdiction which includes Joe Slovo, Du Noon and Doornbach.

CIC works in full co-operation with the Milnerton Medi-Clinic, their main sponsors, the South African Police Service and Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital.

CIC deals with all victims of trauma which includes road accidents, death, murder, suicide, rape, armed robbery, child and elderly abuse, substance abuse, domestic violence, HIV/Aids and other traumatic incidents.

CIC’s service is provided by volunteers from the community who give their services free of charge, often at a cost to themselves.

CIC operates together with Milnerton Medi-Clinic, Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital and the Milnerton, Table View and Melkbosstrand police stations. If called directly by the community only advice and referrals will be given.

For help or referrals the Community Intervention Centre, based at Milnerton-Medi-Clinic can be contacted on 082 821 3447 (24 hours) or 021 529 9390 (mornings only).

Information can be found on the CIC website www.blaauwberg.net/cic.

STREET CHILDREN ARE A REALITY THAT SHOULD CONCERN US AS

MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. USUALLY THE VICTIMS OF POVERTY,

VIOLENCE, HOMELESSNESS, CRIME AND HUNGER, FOR THEM, LIFE ON

THE STREET IS OFTEN NO WORSE THAN THE LIFE THEY LEFT BEHIND.

Street children are among the most vulnerable in society, living daily with the problems of illiteracy, drug and alcohol abuse, hunger and malnutrition, sexual exploitation and abuse and more recently, the dangers of HIV and AIDS.

Yet despite the provision of services aimed at moving them off the street, many of them have lived on the street for years. What is needed is a new attitude and approach – one that acknowledges their realities, and works towards reducing the negative impact the street environment has on them,

as well as the negative impact they have on the environment.

The TLC OUTREACH PROJECT aims to –

• Facilitate the rehabilitation of street children from the Atlantis area living in the Table View, Blaauwberg and Melkbosstrand areas;

• Facilitate the re-unification of street children with their families where

possible;

• We also have a FEEDING THE NATION scheme, whereby a feeding scheme in the informal settlements meets the needs of more than 150 to 200 children on a weekly basis.  This all goes to reduce the number of new street children in the area;

Our rehabilitation facilities “The Farm”, located on the N7, was recently razed to the ground. This was the secure therapeutic and rehabilitation environment for these street children.

We have the infrastructure to care for these children but we need the funding to provide them with  “the home” they don’t know.

If we, as a society, were able to pull together and contribute our resources in assisting with funding, think of the invaluable difference we can all make in their lives.

SALT - Sharing Abundant Life Together

SALT (sharing abundant life together) is a community outreach, registered as a Non Profit Organization and Public Benefit Organization, working together with other accredited organisations and churches in order to bring change & to uplift our local community.

Our Projects Include:

Light Bags - Food parcels aimed at assisting TB/HIV/AIDS patients who are on

ARV’S and needing nutrition to aid their recovery. A light bag can feed a family of 4 for 1 week.

Feed the Nation - A project that networks with all the accredited organizations within the area & supplies much needed food supplies and food parcels. Food is a basic human right.

Enozipho Educare / Day care centre - Lillian Dikana and her staff take care of just under 100 kids per month. She currently runs the educare/daycare from 2 old shipping containers, with no toilet facilities and very limited space. At the moment there are two babies per cot and 2 helpers to take care of 30 babies ranging from 6 months to 3 years old. We have come alongside her to see how we can assist.

Joe Slovo Community Project - Plans are currently at the Council to build a Chromadek building to the value of R450.000.00 Future plans for the land is to build a community centre, where children can spend the afternoon in a safe environment being taken care of until parents return from home.

Fire and flood relief - SALT was instrumental in the recent Xenophobia attacks and was nominated by the Table View Police forum to be part of the official Disaster Management team for our community.

We continually support the community in times when fire and flood relief is needed by supplying food, blankets and clothing.

Establishing an ownership for our community - Table View is a growing community and therefore faces many challenges regarding social issues. Just like any other community we have problems regarding the up keep of our parks, pavements, hospitals etc and SALT feels that its time for us to take some sort of responsibility regarding the maintenance of our community and taking pride in where we live. We plan to launch this project in the first term of 2009 where teams will be targeting areas within our community that need to be upgraded or worked on. All involved will be volunteers who live in our community and what to see change.
